Linear Obsessionalis delighted to present this beautifully recorded collection of intimate duos from Chris Cundy (bass clarinet) and Benedict Taylor (viola) "These eight duos were recorded at the chapel of Francis Close Hall. It’s a space I’ve been familiar with for close to twenty years now, providing me with a home for various musical collaborations, concerts and recording sessions. Recorded by music archivist and friend Chris Trent the results give a close account of how the bass...

Parametric mouthpiece cap design that can be modified with OpenSCAD program file. The values in the program are for a no name plastic tenor sax mouthpiece I have been using. Measure your own mouthpiece with calipers and plug in the values I suggest in the program. I tried thicker walls at first but the 0.8 mm walls flex nicely to hug the mouthpiece. Ligature shown in the photo will be uploaded at a later date.

Chris Heenan: contrabass clarinet Matthias Müller: trombone Nils Ostendorf: trumpet The Berlin-based improvising wind trio Trigger (Chris Heenan, Matthias Müller, Nils Ostendorf) was formed in 2009 and works on creating a unitary sound of discrete sonic layers. Through the use of multiphonics, circular breathing, and other extended techniques, Trigger forges a music of gradual depth with sudden shifts in texture and mood. The current direction of the trio is long continuous masses of...

The Default Mode was written in response to Disquiet Junto Project 0322: The Wanderer . The idea of this piece was exactly the opposite of Disquiet Junto Project 0321: Let’s Active . "The idea is to use musical/acoustic features that convey and evoke sadness in the listener, since in our recent study we demonstrate that sad (compared with happy) music enhances mind-wandering levels (shown both behaviourally and with neuroimaging methods)." As I wanted to link the two, I used some...

This piece was written in response to Naviarhaiku282 – the sky I see the sky I see seems full of magnolia blossoms This is a haiku by Natsume Soseki. His investigation of a rapidly westernizing Japanese society and its sense of alienation has kept him famous into the 21st century: to this day, he’s considered one of the greatest Japanese writers of all time. Soseki wrote novels (most famously Kokoro in 1914), haiku and children’s fairy tales. The Sky I See was written for three...

Tewanima was a silver medalist in the 1912 Olympic games. His 10,000 meter run set an American record in that distance that stood for over 50 years. However, as a Hopi Indian, he experienced true Koyaanisqatsi. In 1906 he was forcibly separated from his parents and community, handcuffed and marched 20 miles to Keams Canyon, where he and other Hopi youths were shackled and made to build a road. Soldiers then marched them another 110 miles where they boarded a train to Pennsylvania, 2,000...

This piece was written in response to Disquiet Junto Project 0320: Table of Contents . Choose a favorite book. Consider the tone, the temperament, and the content of each chapter in the book. Compose a piece of music with as many segments to it as there are chapters to the book. Compose each individual segment with the idea that it is loopable as background music while someone is reading the given chapter. Consider making connections between chapters through melodic themes or instrument choice...

For the piece Gobzt I collaborated with Stephen M. Weinstock. He sent me a short movement of a twelve tone string quartet he had written a number of years ago. I pulled the four themes out and reworked them, adding flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, vibraphone, string bass and drum set - basically I changed everything. His themes, however, are completely the basis for the Largo sections.

The request this week ( Prison Sky: Disquiet Junto Project 0271 ) is a piece to remember Bassel Khartabil , a Palestinian Syrian open-source software developer who has been in captivity since 2012 and whose whereabouts are currently unknown. The piece was originally going to be a dance but as I started writing it turned itself into a fugue (I am breaking a number of rules here but that is the best description I can offer). The piece is scored for Saxophone Quartet (soprano, alto, tenor and...

This piece was written in response to Naviarhaiku251 – I have lost my way . I have lost my way In a strange town at night, – A sky of old cold stars. This is a haiku by Richard Wright, one of the most celebrated African-American novelists of the twentieth century. In such a short time he wrote 4000 poems, and his posthumous book " Haiku: This Other World " is a...

Inevitability was written in response to Disquiet Junto Project 0390: Pace Quickens Step 1: For this project you’ll be reworking either a field recording or an old piece of your own music. The slower the better, as far as the original recording is concerned. Reading through these instructions first may aid in your selection process. Step 2: Choose a field recording or and old piece of music of your own. (Define “old” as you like. “Preexistence” is the main factor.) Step 3:...

The idea of this piece was to use the arpeggiated sequence C E G B C’ B G E C that is used as the basis of the Stranger Things theme song. This sequence is actually extraordinarily similar to the Tron: Legacy - Visual Effects Concept Test , thus the title of this piece. Unlike most of my music, this has no program, so leaving the title as is makes sense. The piece is written for five string and five woodwind players.

Ground Swell was written in response to Disquiet Junto Project 0356: Ground Swell . Step 1: The goal is to create a piece of music that uses layers to create a sense of unease, eeriness, or disquiet. Step 2: Think of a place that summons up the sensations described in Step 1. Step 3: Derive sounds from the place that came to mind in Step 2. May 7, 1970 was the third day of protests against the Vietnam war at West Virginia University. Thousands of students had collected at Grumbein’s Island in front of the student union building and effectively blocked traffic, chanting and giving speeches. The military draft had been reinstated, and fresh in everyone’s mind was the Kent State killings, which had happened just a few days prior. On the wall of the student union building the jocks and frat boys lined up, yelling down at the...

This piece was written in response to Naviarhaiku278 – coolness coolness— a mountain stream splashes out between houses This is a haiku by Masaoka Shiki, who dedicated most of his life to haiku and is usually credited with reviving this Japanese poetic form. A little over five months ago I started working on this piece. The idea was simple, start with something dark and end with something light. However, the more I worked on the opening, the more it reminded me of the state of things in our country and unlike when there was this much division fifty years ago, at least back then there was an ending point, something I do not see so easily now. So the project became larger in scope and meaning, and more difficult to find a way to move from the...
