This first set of free to download, Creative Commons-licensed MP3 releases from our electronica-based net.label, Monotonik ( http://www.monotonik.com ), were originally released from January 1999 to March 2001. They chronicle the period after Monotonik decided to stop releasing .MOD files, and start releasing those new-fangled (at the time!) .MP3s. Some highlights might include Lackluster's languidly beautiful "Bothersome (Mother Mix)", later to feature on his lovely 'Container' album...

Welcome to Monotonik's brand new year, courtesy of a debut release (or is it?) from Finn and self-proclaimed cosmic superspy, Aleksi Virta. He fearlessly busts out this supremely accomplished album of jazzy, dubby electronics, originally released on a scandalously limited, horrendously collectible 100-copy sold-out CDR edition, and now, thankfully available to the general public via the wonders of the Internet. So basically, we're looking at everything from the headnodding organ jam of 'Nebulae...

This third-party compilation is one of three put together by an unknown person and spread on P2P networks, and acts as a 'best of' for Monotonik. We decided it has excellent track choice (check out early tracks from Whiskas and Jiva in particular), plus a number of tracks only normally available in .MOD form as .MP3s, so we've made it an official release and added it to our catalog - the Internet and freely distributed music comes up with cool ideas like this if you're lucky. Track listing...

Well, we certainly don't release many DJ sets here at Monotonik - in fact, the last one was over 2 years ago, wow. And the main reason for this is that there's very few good eclectic mixes out there. Until now, that is. We first heard the mixing skills of Chicago's ~aD being spread via, of all places, Usenet. So we're proud to present the first of a number of stunning DJ sets we're going to put out from him - hop on the "Pharis Wheel" :P So, why do we love this mix so much? Well,...

We're proud to welcome the debut release on Monotonik from Stefan Ternemar, the Swedish artist also known as S.T. 'Emotions In A Box' is Stefan's first set of songs released anywhere outside his own webpage, and it's a fitting introduction to his bold, melodically strident idm electronics. First off would be 'Downtown', almost Huelsbeck-ian in its wish to get straight down to brass tacks and blast you with carefully considered catchiness, heaping layer upon layer of gorgeously synthetic sounds...

The Monotonik mix-terror continues with German musician, DJ, and collaborator sys(2074), maintainer of the Corewatch Conspiracy, and boy, what a cute lil near-75-minute mix he's concocted for us Earth aliens. Not purely content with tricking around with Drexciya, Techno Animal and Alec Empire, sys(2074) throws his own little interludes and even Vektrex on a Monotonik tip into the whole caboodle. Highly recommended on the dark-ish intriguing-ish tip. Tracklisting: 01. BASS-O-MATIC love catalogue...

Mono mainstay and UK breakz+techno-terror Hoffman (formerly known as Dreamfish) gives us another absolute gem of a mix, and this time it's a drum+bass extravanganza taken from the best of the junglistically influenced Mono/Mono211/Monotonik tunes to be released over the past 4 years. This is also unique in that it's Hoffman's first virtual mix - whilst he's a whiz with the ol' Technics, this track was mixed using the Virtual Turntables PC software alongside a Numark mixer, plus an Alesis...

Better to burn out with this final compilation. It's been over 3 years and getting on for 200 releases on both labels, so the title - pretty suitable, we guess? h0l and the rest of the mono211/monotonik crew would like to extend their thanks to everyone who ever released MODs via mono or mono211 or...

Some of the releasers on Monotonik are more mysterious than others. But we quite enjoy it when the more shadowy ones turn up, slip us a gorgeous piece of music, and then slink away into the ether again. All we know about Gschmidt is that he might be named after a mathematic process, his previous ' Nibiru Coming ' release precis-ed rogue planet paranoia excellently, and this new 'Time Tolled EP' is a wonderful journey through some kind of wilfully odd, strangely beautiful soundscape. But if we...

Finnish old-school Amiga demo scene legend Aleksi Eeben, aka Heatbeat, has never really let up on the composition, but has, rather wonderfully, regressed in his choice of hardware over time, from Amiga, through Commodore 64, to Vic-20, with sideways glances to the Game Boy. But it's his C64 equivalent of 'The White Album', the appropriately named 'The White Box', which sums up some of his borderline deviant SID-chip excursions over the previous few years. The actual 'White Box' artifact is a ...

He had a part in the first ever Mono release back in 1996, and he's being hanging around with us ever since, poor guy. Now, UK composer/DJ Hoffman (formerly known as Dreamfish, fact-fans!) has been good enough to provide us with the first of two superior DJ mixes. With all the mp3s Monotonik+friends have been releasing of late, sometimes people (including us!) forget about the 200+ .MODs we released from 1996-1999, all of which are still available on the Mono site! Fortunately, US-based Luminfire hasn't forgotten about the early house, techno, and beat-based .MODs we put out as Mono back then, and so he put together this mix for us that highlights some of the best material from back then. Want your Mortimer Twang? We got it here. Want your ChuckB and...

*EXCLUSIVE* - damn those evil cousins of my associates. Who? No'Mo', that's who. They've been strongarming me again, and look what they've made me release. No'Mo' release #12, and it's Kirby remixing Bjork's "All Is Full Of Love" in a rather magical nu-school breaks mp3 style. They may be evil, but this is SO good. Grab 'All Is Full Of Love (Kirby Remix)' here (5612k).

Ladies and gentlemen, back for an encore, and WHAT an encore, it's our friend and yours, the incorrigible, indelible Jake Kaufman , also known as Virt , with the second installment of his astounding NES chip disc, now known as 'fx 2.0'. Since the mtk.release of the original 'fx', which was an entire imaginary NES soundtrack in pint-size .S3M format, Jake has been doing demi-deific stuff with Nintendo's sound chips in his primary career as a game musician. His "Atlantis: The Lost...

We're delighted to present another release from the divine UK-er and ex-Butterfly Child dream-pop-ster, Pendle, in his cheeky Idmonster alias. With recent Idmonster material on real-world compilations from Neo-Ouija and Notype, people seem to really dig his smooth, truly serene style, which he puts to good use composing soundtracks for a diverse range of TV documentaries in the UK. And we treasure the 'Monster too :) His latest track, "Low Flying Planes", is magisterially ethereal. It...

Nowadays, Mosaik's Jakob Svanholm, aka Radix/Tpolm from his demo-scene days, is on a musical hiatus, as far as we know - apart from classical guitar pieces, that is. But we here at Monotonik have been so enchanted by his tracks as Mosaik that we've been slowly releasing them over the past year or two. This track, "Sunreal", is the culmination of that music, and hopefully we'll be hearing brand new material from Mosaik soon, but in the meantime.. believe us, this more than suffices....

Although sometimes overlooked, due to their release on Monotonik's lesser-known sublabel Mono211, the two albums we've put out so far by Dutch ex-techno producer Izmar are, everyone seems to agree, pretty damn special, twinning Fila Brazillia style grooves with gorgeous melodies. So, when we got a whole extra CD of material from him (to be dealt with soon!), plus a follow-up of this lovely four-track EP, we grinned happily and got on with the harrowing job of actually releasing it, starting...

Having discovered Japanese techno artist Tatsu from his wonderful early work on his net.label Bumpfoot, we co-opted him to do an exclusive new EP on Monotonik, and the immensely lush 6-track 'August EP' is the result, showcasing the immensely pure, almost Detroit-tinged pastoral electronica - no tricks, no feints, just a trip back to the classics. We start with 'Stillness/Introspective Me', which briefly showcases some gorgeous ambience, before moving straight into 'Sky and Sea/Daytime Dream',...

Monotonik is _very_ proud to present an exclusive 6-track EP from Finland's Lackluster, aka Esa Ruoho, an artist we've been releasing (as Distance) since way back when we were putting out .MODs, and have seen go from the limited-edition "CDR#2" on Monotonik (our only physical release ever) to critical acclaim through his 12" and album releases on the UK's DeFocus Records, and more recent vinyl and CDs put out through Rikos, Merck, and U-Cover, to name but a few. We've known of Finnish idm artist Tweeter for several years, stemming from his association with former Monotonik artist Substance's .MOD label Voodoo, and have previously been delighted to release his gloriously smooth electronic stylings on the label. Now, the notoriously painstaking artist formerly known as Tweeter is called Planet Boelex (actually the name of his last release on Monotonik), and he makes a triumphant return to us with the 'Sinking In The Soup EP'. Such a bacchanalian assemblage of best bitter and sexual deviancy has not been seen since the days of George IV. And in honour of this august occasion, and because we're all to drunk to track, we're finally releasing the tune Subi did at the Ars Electronica Electrolobby in 2000 (see here for more info). Only...

More of the pretty unique Bay Tremore junglistics, and this one is bordering on the gorgeous - full of little turns and cut-ups and organ stabs and drums on drums, and for four channels too, it's maddeningly good. Apologies to all those bands using their thirty-two channel studios and making music worse than this - we didn't mean to show you up, honestly ;)

Season's greetings from the Monotonik klan come in the form of this wonderful duo from Vim!, label-star and uniquely.. unique artist. So we kick it with trademark retro melodies in "4-Bit Xmas" and then do some warped Arfur Daley-sampling breakwizardry with "Wakey Wakey Wales - It's Christmas!" If only Yuletide could always be as warped as this.

We've now been releasing tracks from UK electronic wunderkid Vim! for, well, seven and a half years, on both .MOD and this 'new-fangled' .MP3. It's fitting that the final release on Monotonik, perhaps for ever, will be from someone new, because we've always tried to promote new and interesting artists. Mike Kidd brought the 'Impermanence EP' to us and we thought it right, and good, because it combines the melodies we crave with the deep happiness of a well-crafted tune. Take 'Haunted Raves', for example. We're not really sure which raves have been haunted by it, but the abstract power shown here may well enchant a few party-goers in...

As promised, and as most of you have been dreading/looking forward to, the Subi best-of retrospective has finally arrived. Throughout his 11 years making music in the Amiga 'demo-scene' and outside, Sam Brown, aka Subi, and formerly known as Subculture, has always shown originality and a doggedness that's characterised his excellent output. The typical Subi release blends cheeky samples, breakbeats, and rampant catchiness to produce something that's pretty much unlike most of the other music...

Oh my. Well, I thought it was about bloody time I (h0l!) released something else on Mono, but I just haven't had time to compose anything recently, what with running the group and trying to design intros and having a life n stuff. :P So here's a rather subtle, mellow elektronik track I did for Sane/Monk a while ago, you might just possibly have spotted it in an Amiga discmag somewhere. Anyhow, it comes along with a bonus track (which was the alternative tune for the Axis "Headcase" intro,...

Well, Subi tries to confound us again with one of his completely unclassifiable songs, just when we've decided to put our techno output on a sublabel. Thanks _so_ much. ;) This tune definitely rules, but should it go out on Mono or Monotonik? Well, think of it this way - do mad screaming Prodigy-style songs full of guitar get played out more by the Chemical Brothers or the Aphex Twin? Yep, Chemicals every time, and since this is a close relative to jungle and a distant cousin of bigbeat, it...

Wowee, a first release for Distance on the breakbeat-ish Mono211, and this time it's a real interesting blend between his conventional unconventionality and a new sub-bass and sharp breaks style. Jazz and Fndr guest it up with this rather lovely drum+bass track, perfect for chilling out or rocking the funky beat, depending on how loud you play it. Mono recommends you play it very loud indeed. :) Four channels can still kick some sizable ass, even with supa-complex jungle riddims, and here's some further proof. Enjoy.

In an alternative universe, Tom Jenkinson, aka Squarepusher, is acknowledged as the true king of electronic music, not those spiky old bores, Aphex Twin and Autechre. And in that alternative universe, Finland's Fun Tourist is, well.. at least grand vizier. And probably senior vice-president in charge of snare rushes. Regardless of folly, "DDD" is a truly spectacular piece of electronic music, complete with funky drums cut to ribbons, strange octave-pitched tribal chants, 8-bit heavy...

It may not surprise you to know that Mono and associated labels continues to cherish Subi. As mentioned before, if we were John Peel, he'd be The Fall, and now he even gets his own custom sublabel for this, his first all-new single in a year or two, preceding his forthcoming _blockbuster_ bestof mp3 album, "The Rave-O-Lution Will Be Terrorised - The Best Of Subi 1989-2000" :) He's English, he makes videogames for a living, he still honestly believes it's 1990, and...

This 3-track miniaturised release from the genius of Vim! has been floating around for a few months now, along with a mass of other material he's accumulated since the release of his "Linden: Home Of The Hits" album for Surgery Records. In some ways, this is closer to the couple of tunes Keith has released as Vom, with perfectly ambient sketches and much influence from artists such as Windy and Carl. But where "00" lays on the Harold Budd-esque carefully placed mess of keys...

A guest release from that rarity on m211, someone from a continent outside Europe. This time Darkhalo steps in to show us what an interesting reading the Americans are taking on the whole d+b thing, encompassing Californian breakbeat, acid b-lines, and even some Transeau shaken up in there - just the right side of catchy, we fear, and fully compatible with the breaks and beats that m211 insists on releasing in such a hipflask lackadaisical fashion..

Room spinning. Confused. Can't find door. Help me. We've been releasing maze-like, beautifully complex music from quiet, enigmatic UK idm artist Vim! since 1996 - thus, we're heading towards his 10-year anniversary on Monotonik, insanely enough. With that in mind, it's only natural that there might be some maturation of style, coming, as it does, after his real-life album and remix releases on Surgery, Merck, Carpark, and others - the hazy, redolent chiptune sinewave sounds of 'Perpetual Autumn EP' show how we all grow up and chill out somehow,...
